6.6 The Initial Body
As the creation process commences with the breathing of divine Spirit into the Universal Body of the cosmos, described in section 3, it formed the Initial Body that is the first “material” thing to be created as a result of the interaction or marriage between the First Intellect and the Universal Soul. The difference between the Universal Body and the Initial Body is that the latter exists in space and time, i.e. it is an illuminated body that has a structure and dimensions where the contents of the cosmos, i.e. all the orbs and constellations, shall take place. The Initial Body can be thought of in two ways: it may be like a huge cloud of some sort of primary matter from which the cosmos was developed into its current state, or it can be that the cosmos was created by, rather than ‘in’, this Initial Body, in a very complicated process that can be realized through the Single Monad model and the principle of ongoing re-creation as explained in chapter IV.
In addition to that, Ibn al-Arabi explains that Nature is the shadow of the Universal Soul, so for the part of this shadow that did not extend but remained in the Soul she degraded below the Intellect with respect to the degree of light and luminosity, and the part of the shadow of the Soul that has extended over the essence of the Chaos was Nature, then the Initial Body appeared from the essence of Chaos and Nature, and it was dark that the Sufis compared it with the Black Bead, due to this natural darkness, whereas they called the Soul as the Green Emerald, because she degraded below the level of the bright Intellect that is sometimes called as the White Pearl, a title of the book mentioned above.
Ibn al-Arabi then adds that the forms and the shapes of the objects of the cosmos appeared in the Initial Body which was enlightened by the Soul so that life spread into its parts, which started to transform from one state to another due to the motion of time determined by the divine Name the Age [III.296.1].
