Dream time and waking records: SMM/DTT and lucid-dream research and SMM/DTT
Dreams can reorganize narrative, memory and the feeling of duration. That makes them a useful comparison for SMM/DTT’s distinction between generated experience and publicly accessible records. Research on communication during lucid dreaming provides a concrete bridge, while careful timing definitions prevent vivid retrospective reports from being mistaken for evidence of an additional physical time dimension.
Dream duration can mean elapsed laboratory time, the interval a dreamer estimates during an experience, or the length of a narrative remembered after awakening. These measures need not coincide. A report containing many events may summarize or reconstruct a story rather than document every event unfolding over an independently timed interval. SMM/DTT can clarify the distinction because it already separates production, completion and access. The relevant observer is the dreamer, whose memory and report are themselves processes requiring explanation.
02What the SMM/DTT distinction contributes
SMM begins with one nonspatial generative source. DTT distinguishes its inner production from the outer order in which completed results become accessible. The six inner levels are nested functional dependencies within that production; the seventh denotes outer completion. They are not six independent clocks, six spatial directions, or six simultaneously occupied temporal axes. This distinction makes the framework more specific than a general claim that everything changes: it asks how a world of persistent relations can be generated before its spatial representation is taken for granted.
A discrete sequence can describe a continuous-looking process without deciding whether reality itself is discrete. Film frames, sampled signals and numerical time steps all illustrate the distinction between a representation and its represented object. DTT gives the distinction an ontological ambition: completed moments would arise from inner generative structure, while outer observation encounters an effectively continuous world. The central question is therefore what supplies continuity across completions. Merely making the steps very short does not explain how records remain related or why a particular smooth evolution appears.
Continuity has several meanings. A trajectory can be continuous in position, differentiable in velocity, continuous in quantum probability, or phenomenally continuous to an observer. These properties are logically separable. A sequence of quantum states connected by small unitary updates can approximate a differentiable evolution even though the update label is integer valued. A sequence of unrelated images can be shown equally quickly without generating the same temporal understanding. Persistent memory and lawful correlations do much of the explanatory work usually hidden by the phrase high refresh rate. [3]

03What the experimental bridge establishes
Konkoly and colleagues reported two-way communication with selected lucid dreamers during verified REM sleep. Participants could receive questions and sometimes produce agreed physiological responses while remaining asleep. This creates an unusual link between an ongoing dream and an external record, reducing dependence on later recollection alone. It does not establish that all dream narratives unfold at extraordinary speed or that dreaming accesses a separate physical cosmos. The result concerns particular participants, conditions and successful communication episodes. [1]
04A worked timing protocol
Suppose a dreamer produces a pre-agreed eye signal at the start of a counting task and another at its end. The laboratory interval between signals is ten seconds. On awakening, the dreamer estimates twenty seconds. The ratio of estimated to recorded duration is two for that report. It is not yet a ratio of two fundamental physical times. Estimation bias, task interpretation, missed signals and memory reconstruction must be considered. Repeating the protocol with independently specified scoring can reveal a stable pattern. The calculation is useful because it defines the numerator and denominator separately rather than turning a striking dream description into a clock measurement.
Rreport = estimated interval / laboratory interval = 20 s / 10 s = 2
05The specific DTT comparison
DTT’s inner generation is a proposed cosmological process, whereas dream construction is an activity of an embodied observer. The two should not be identified merely because both are called inner. A useful bridge is hierarchical: a source-generated brain can create a modelled scene whose experiential space and time differ from its immediate sensory environment. Outer completion can refer to a physiological response or later report, while the dream’s subjective organization remains a different object of analysis. The six nested generative levels are not six sleep stages or six dream worlds.
06Psychical meaning without an unsupported inference
Dreams can carry emotional, symbolic or spiritual significance regardless of whether they reveal new physical laws. Ibn Arabi’s imaginal language offers a philosophical framework for considering forms of appearance, but the interpretation of a dream and the verification of an external event are different tasks. A source-based ontology can make room for both without treating every vivid image as a public fact. If a claim concerns information about an external target, its evidential standard requires independently recorded targets and procedures; ordinary dream meaning does not depend on such a claim. This keeps the psychical discussion respectful and conceptually clear. [2]
07A constructive research use
The most useful SMM/DTT question is how a temporally integrated experience can arise with altered access to the environment and later become a report. A model can distinguish ongoing content, retained memory, awareness of dreaming and the ability to communicate. These capacities need not appear together in every episode. Comparing their dependencies would develop the programme’s observer theory without assuming a special quantum mechanism. It would also connect dream time with the broader problem of how completed records preserve, compress and sometimes distort the history of a generated experience.
08A further conceptual benchmark
For a finite-dimensional system with bounded Hamiltonian H, let one update be Uδ = exp(−iHδ/ℏ). After n updates the state is Uδⁿψ = exp(−iHnδ/ℏ)ψ. At the sampled times t = nδ this exactly agrees with ordinary unitary evolution. The integer n therefore does not by itself predict a new effect. An alternative update, an observable restriction between samples, or a physical limit on δ would be needed to distinguish a fundamentally discrete theory. This calculation also fixes the units: Hδ/ℏ is dimensionless. A dimensionless stage number becomes seconds only after a clock calibration or an independently derived timing law.
