A globally stationary quantum description can contain correlations that function as time for a subsystem. That mathematical possibility differs from a metaphysical account of eternity. SMM/DTT can connect them through the origin of clocks and records, while distinguishing absence of an external time parameter from absence of all temporal relations.
Page and Wootters proposed describing subsystem dynamics through correlations in a stationary global setting. The important idea is that the whole need not be labelled by an external clock for one part to serve as a clock for another. This is a physical-mathematical construction with specified subsystems and correlations. It does not establish a divine eternity or show that every experience of passage is illusory. [1]
SMM begins with one nonspatial generative source. DTT distinguishes its inner production from the outer order in which completed results become accessible. The six inner levels are nested functional dependencies within that production; the seventh denotes outer completion. They are not six independent clocks, six spatial directions, or six simultaneously occupied temporal axes. This distinction makes the framework more specific than a general claim that everything changes: it asks how a world of persistent relations can be generated before its spatial representation is taken for granted.
Eternity can mean endless duration, existence without temporal succession, or a distinctive mode of apprehending reality. Spiritual time can concern lived orientation, transformation or a metaphysical order that differs from clock time. SMM/DTT’s inner/outer distinction provides a natural place to discuss these meanings, provided they are not collapsed. A very fast hidden process remains temporal; an infinite number of moments is not automatically an atemporal whole.
The contrast between dependence and sequence is central. A theorem depends on axioms without occurring later than them in physical time. A melody unfolds in sequence even when a musician understands its form as a whole. A metaphysical source could be held to ground temporal events without itself preceding them by a measurable interval. DTT can use this distinction to clarify how the Single Monad relates to outer time. If the source is described as changing through inner stages, the account must explain whether that is genuine duration, logical dependence or a mode of becoming unlike observable succession. [3]
Consider the history state |Ψ⟩ = N⁻¹ᐟ² Σₙ |n⟩C ⊗ Uⁿ|ψ₀⟩S, with orthogonal clock labels |n⟩C. Conditioning on clock outcome n yields the system state Uⁿ|ψ₀⟩S. The entire expression can be written at once while the conditional states differ with n. This demonstrates relational variation. It does not by itself prove that the state satisfies a desired Hamiltonian constraint, that the clock is ideal or that records of sequential measurements behave correctly. Those are additional physical conditions. The example nevertheless separates a global description from the temporal relations accessible inside it.
DTT adds the question of how the clock-system partition, its correlations and its readout arise from one source. If they are simply inserted into the initial state, the source model has not explained their coordination. A constructive result would generate them together and identify the completion instrument through which an observer reads the clock. The six nested levels could organize that construction, but are not six independent clock subsystems by definition. This is a precise point at which a temporal ontology can contribute to a timeless formalism.
Metaphysical eternity can mean an order of being that grounds succession without itself unfolding in succession. A stationary quantum state is instead a state satisfying a dynamical or constraint condition in a defined theory. The concepts may invite comparison, but neither entails the other. SMM can discuss their shared challenge to an external master time while preserving their different meanings. This produces a stronger account than treating H|Ψ⟩ = 0 as a scientific translation of every spiritual statement about timelessness. The physical question concerns relational clocks; the metaphysical question concerns the ground of the entire temporal order. [2]
Compare an endlessly repeated musical note with understanding a finite musical composition as a complete form. The first has unbounded succession: another note always follows. The second can be considered without imagining an indefinitely extended performance. Neither example proves a theology of eternity, but they separate duration from wholeness. Now consider a listener whose attention makes a short interval feel expansive. That is a third phenomenon, concerning experienced time. A theory should not move from one meaning to another merely because all three are described as timeless. SMM/DTT can provide a framework for relating them while preserving their different explanatory demands.
THE SAME QUESTION, DIFFERENT STARTING POINTS
| Question | SMM/DTT | timeless quantum cosmology |
|---|---|---|
| Temporal dependence | SMM can ask how the temporal order depends on a source without treating that source as an earlier event. | Timeless quantum formulations seek physical correlations without an externally supplied evolution parameter. |
| Meaning of timelessness | Metaphysical eternity concerns a mode of dependence or being beyond ordinary succession. | A stationary global state can encode relational clock correlations, but stationarity does not establish metaphysical eternity. |
