Contextuality and observable algebras: SMM/DTT and Bohmian mechanics

A quantum archive cannot be a context-independent list of answers to every possible measurement. Comparing DTT with Bohmian mechanics, this article works through a two-qubit parity contradiction and explains how a source-generated test language could support definite completed records while preserving the nonclassical algebra of actual observables.

01The question behind this comparison

Quantum contextuality concerns whether one can assign outcomes to observables independently of the compatible measurements performed alongside them. The issue is sharper than the everyday statement that an apparatus disturbs a system. In appropriate quantum scenarios, algebraic relations among compatible observables cannot all be represented by one collection of pre-existing context-independent values.

For SMM/DTT this matters because a source archive cannot simply store a fixed classical answer to every potential question if it is intended to reproduce the full quantum algebra. The completion interface must depend on the actual measurement context or use an explicitly quantum state structure. A nonspatial origin does not remove the contradiction; what matters is how the source represents compatible products and how different readouts overlap. [3] [4]

02The SMM/DTT starting point

The Single Monad Model begins with one nonspatial generative source. The Duality of Time Theory distinguishes the source’s inner production from the outer order in which completed records become accessible. Its six inner levels are nested functional roles of one process: a higher role organizes lower-level work. The seventh is the completion or observation interface. They are neither six independent clocks nor six additional time coordinates.

This distinction supplies a useful research question: which features of an observed world can follow from the way a source produces, retains and releases information? A concrete answer needs a state space, an autonomous update, retained memory and a rule connecting completion to an accessible measurement. In the constructions discussed here, those mathematical ingredients are stated explicitly. A successful finite example establishes what its specified mechanism can do; further arguments connect it to physical particles, spacetime or universal laws. [1]

03How the comparator works

Bohmian mechanics supplements a wavefunction with an actual configuration, ordinarily particle positions. The Schrödinger equation guides the wavefunction, and a velocity law guides the configuration. When configurations follow the quantum-equilibrium distribution, the theory reproduces the usual quantum statistics in its applicable domain. Apparatus outcomes are ultimately configurations too, so measurement is treated as a physical interaction rather than a separate primitive collapse.

This is an instructive comparison for SMM because it provides an explicit account of definite observed events while retaining an additional, nonclassical level of description. But a Bohmian particle follows a trajectory in a configuration space whose geometry is supplied. The Single Monad proposal instead seeks to explain how spatial and particle records arise at all. The challenge is therefore not to rename a guiding wave as inner time. It is to show what variables replace the configuration, how records obey the equilibrium statistics, and whether the replacement adds an observable consequence. [2]

04The decisive comparison

Bohmian mechanics is contextual for general observables: the outcome associated with an operator depends on the actual measurement coupling and configuration, not on a universal hidden value for that operator. Definite particle positions therefore do not contradict the contextuality square. DTT can likewise maintain definite completed records while rejecting a context-independent value assignment to every potential test.

The useful correspondence is methodological. Both theories need the apparatus as part of the physical account. A source that returns different labels for two procedures representing the same nominal observable must explain the dependence through their interactions, while preserving operational equivalence where experiments require it. Bohmian mechanics supplies guidance equations that accomplish this in its domain; DTT seeks to generate the underlying configuration and its readout as well. A single controller programmed with each expected measurement answer would not establish that deeper result. A stronger construction would show how one source algebra and one completion rule yield the contextual product relations without separate tuning. That would clarify both the reality of observed labels and the limits of treating them as a catalogue of intrinsic properties. [2] [3] [4]

05Worked benchmark

Consider the nine two-qubit observables arranged as rows (X⊗I, I⊗X, X⊗X), (I⊗Y, Y⊗I, Y⊗Y), and (X⊗Y, Y⊗X, Z⊗Z). The observables commute within each row and each column. Multiplying each row gives +I. The first two column products give +I, while the third gives −I.

If every observable had a fixed value ±1 preserving these compatible products, multiplying the three row constraints would make the product of all nine values +1. Multiplying the three column constraints would make the same product −1. This is impossible. The contradiction uses the Pauli algebra and a context-independent value assignment; it does not state that every hidden-variable theory is impossible. A completion model can avoid it by allowing context-dependent outcomes, but then the context dependence is a physical ingredient to explain, not a trivial consequence of having a single source. [3] [4]

(XX)(YY)(ZZ)=−I in the third column; row products are +I

Here XX means X⊗X. All operator products invoked as joint measurements are within commuting rows or columns.

06What follows for the source programme

A productive DTT reconstruction specifies a test language before defining which inner histories count as the same observation. The resulting observable quotient may identify some histories while preserving different answers to incompatible tests. This approach can explain why a retained record is a restricted interface to the source. It succeeds only if the quotient preserves the required quantum composition rules; merely selecting a convenient list of allowed questions does not derive them. [3] [4]
