Neoplatonic accounts relate multiplicity to a unity that is not one ordinary object among others. SMM shares that fundamental question while giving temporal generation a distinctive role. This essay compares dependence, emanation and completion, showing why a differentiated world need not be understood as material flowing outward from a source located at its spatial center.
Plotinus’s discussion of time and eternity places the source of differentiated reality outside the category of an ordinary changing object. Its relation to the world is poorly represented by a fluid pouring from one location into another. SMM’s nonspatial Monad has a comparable demand: the source cannot be located inside the space it is intended to explain. The comparison is philosophical, and the traditions’ theological meanings remain distinct. [1]
SMM begins with one nonspatial generative source. DTT distinguishes its inner production from the outer order in which completed results become accessible. The six inner levels are nested functional dependencies within that production; the seventh denotes outer completion. They are not six independent clocks, six spatial directions, or six simultaneously occupied temporal axes. This distinction makes the framework more specific than a general claim that everything changes: it asks how a world of persistent relations can be generated before its spatial representation is taken for granted.
The Cosmic Heart is most illuminating as a symbol of concentrated unity that communicates life and intelligibility to a differentiated world. In SMM it belongs to a metaphysical account of the Single Monad and continuous creation. A responsible interpretation preserves the symbol’s philosophical force while asking what, if anything, can be translated into a formal source model. The heart need not denote an organ at the center of physical space. A nonspatial source has no geographic center from which a signal travels outward.
Three claims can be separated. The world depends on one source; the source produces organized relations; and those relations sustain distinct experiences. Each is stronger than a picture of a central node with arrows to everything else. A network node is already located within an assumed graph. The Single Monad is proposed as prior to that relational articulation. A mathematical representation must therefore explain why the diagram is a representation of source dependence rather than a literal map of the cosmos. This is especially relevant when physical and psychical meanings of heart appear together. [2]
The truths of a geometrical system depend on its defining structure, but are not fragments emitted by its axioms. One musical form can support many performances without losing pieces of itself. These analogies illustrate dependence without spatial division. They do not prove a metaphysics, but show why the many’s dependence on the one is subtler than counting parts. SMM/DTT can formalize one dependence through a source-to-readout map while acknowledging that no simple analogy captures the full claim.
DTT gives formation a nested temporal articulation: inner generation precedes outer completion in its stated generative sense. Neoplatonic dependence need not be a sequence of equal-duration stages. The question is whether DTT’s inner order is genuinely temporal, logically constructive or ontologically hierarchical. A model should answer rather than move between meanings as needed. The six levels become distinctive when their functions explain the transition to stable relational multiplicity. Placing six names between the One and the world would not establish that result.
SMM can retain the ambition of explaining multiplicity’s unified ground while pursuing an explicit mechanism for accessible structure. The Neoplatonic comparison clarifies why a source need not be depleted by its products and why eternity differs from endless duration. DTT contributes retained records, local perspectives and completion. Their combination is strongest as an inquiry into different kinds of priority. It weakens when a metaphysical hierarchy is presented as a verified spacetime dimension or a mathematical construction is treated as exhausting the meaning of emanation.
Compare a fountain, a musical score and a constitution. A fountain is a spatial source of material flow. A score is a common structure that can support many performances without sending material into them. A constitution is a system of rules that organizes institutions through interpretation and action. Each is called a source, but each explains a different dependence. The Cosmic Heart should not inherit the physics of a pump simply because the word heart suggests circulation. SMM/DTT can instead clarify whether its source relation resembles production, formal constraint or sustaining ontological dependence, and which aspects go beyond all three analogies.
THE SAME QUESTION, DIFFERENT STARTING POINTS
| Question | SMM/DTT | Neoplatonic emanation |
|---|---|---|
| Unity and multiplicity | The nonspatial Monad is intended to explain differentiated appearances without occupying a location inside their generated space. | Neoplatonic emanation describes dependence on a unified source without requiring a spatial outflow of material. |
| Priority | Nested generation, temporal succession and ontological grounding require distinct relations in a developed SMM/DTT account. | The priority of a metaphysical source is not necessarily the chronological priority of an earlier physical event. |
