Assumptions, results and research status
Exact bundle calculations with an explicitly supplied retained tensor
Assumptions
- Smooth Hermitian rank-three and rank-two bundles and their block connections are supplied.
- The proposed reduction retains precisely a globally parallel unit tensor in the product determinant line.
- Any correction of raw spectral transport is declared as an additional transport prescription.
Results
- A parallel product volume eliminates every total-determinant holonomy, including flat periods.
- The trace-subtraction formula is one compatible connection; a weighted optimization gives other declared prescriptions.
- The fifth root used to correct a link and the sixth-root quotient of the group solve different problems.
Open questions
- Which microscopic comparison rule supplies a globally consistent product-volume reference?
- Does physical transport implement the proposed determinant correction?
- Which global bundles and reference preparations belong to the physical theory?
Derive the connection on the determinant line
Let E₃ and E₂ have local orthonormal frames and anti-Hermitian connection matrices A₃ and A₂. Differentiating a top wedge replaces one factor at a time. An off-diagonal replacement repeats another basis vector and vanishes; the diagonal replacements add. Thus the connection induced on det E₃ is Tr A₃, and the connection on the product line D=det E₃⊗det E₂ is their sum.
The trace of A∧A vanishes by antisymmetry and cyclicity. Consequently a trace-curvature condition really is a statement about a line bundle, even when the two carrier connections are non-Abelian. For forward transport Uyx, the induced line link is det U₃ det U₂. Around a loop γ its value is exp(−∮γ a) in a single line trivialization, with transition factors included when several charts are needed.
This derivation also identifies which tensor is being retained. A product volume fixes one phase relation; it does not name a basis or separately fix both block volumes.

Parallelity controls every loop
A nowhere-vanishing unit section τ trivializes the product line as a bundle. Requiring ∇τ=0 adds a condition on its connection. In a frame whose product wedge is τ, its component is the constant one, so a=0. Parallel transport must carry τ at one endpoint to τ at the other; every closed determinant link is therefore exactly one.
The converse holds on each connected component: choose a unit vector at one point and transport it to other points. If all loop holonomies are trivial, the result is independent of the chosen path and gives a global parallel unit section. Smoothness follows from smooth local transport.
Curvature zero is only the infinitesimal part of this criterion. It controls sufficiently small contractible loops, but a flat connection can still represent a nontrivial character of the fundamental group. A topologically trivial underlying line can already exhibit that phenomenon. Neither a local nonzero marker nor local trace cancellation proves that independently prepared tensors patch to the required global section.

A flat circle distinguishes the claims
On a circle with angle φ, take a=iα dφ. Its curvature vanishes because there is no nonzero two-form on this one-dimensional base. The parallel-section equation is z′+iαz=0, with solution z(φ)=e−iαφz(0). This solution is single-valued precisely when α is an integer.
For α=1/2 the loop is −1, despite a trivial line bundle and zero curvature. A single-valued gauge change cannot remove that result. For α=1 the loop is one, and multiplication of components by eiφ removes the line connection.
One realization uses A₃=(iα/3)dφ I₃ and A₂=0. At α=1 the total determinant holonomy is trivial but the triplet holonomy is e−2πi/3I₃. Thus the product condition permits physically distinguishable block comparisons. It removes the total determinant character rather than every possible flat connection. The uniformly distributed triplet example here is a worked variant of the source’s direct-sum counterexample.
An exact family with nontrivial relative periods
Supply a Hermitian line L with any unitary connection aL. Define E₃=(L−2)⊕3 and E₂=(L³)⊕2, using the dual connection for negative powers. Their product determinant is L−6⊗L⁶ and has the canonical parallel pairing.
Here w is the forward line holonomy. Its powers give det W₃ det W₂=w−6w⁶=1 without restricting w itself. If w=−1, the triplet returns with identity and the doublet with −I₂. A calibrated coherent comparison can detect this surviving central phase.
This family supplies global tensor compatibility by construction, including noncontractible periods. It does not establish that an arbitrary source-generated projector produces the same line powers. The source’s displayed phases use backward endpoint comparison; the powers above are written directly in the site’s forward convention. The determinant cancellation is unaffected by that conversion.

Construct one compatible connection
Suppose the global tensor τ has already been supplied, and use τ-compatible frames. Raw projected connections may still have a=Tr A₃+Tr A₂ different from zero. Subtracting the same scalar one-form from all five defining directions produces
Under determinant-compatible frame changes these expressions patch as connections on the reduced bundle. Their curvatures satisfy F̃₃=F₃−(da/5)I₃ and F̃₂=F₂−(da/5)I₂. At a point where the original total trace curvature already vanishes, the correction leaves both block curvatures at that point unchanged.
This constructs a new connection; it is not generally a gauge rewriting of the old one. Nontrivial determinant curvature or periods can change. The space of compatible connections remains affine: adding any adjoint-valued one-form preserves compatibility. Consequently tensor retention specifies a class of transport laws, while the actual choice inside that class needs dynamics or an explicit comparison protocol.

See where the factor one fifth comes from
The equal subtraction minimizes the Hilbert–Schmidt size of a central correction when each defining direction receives the same weight. A useful extension makes that assumption visible. Write the corrections as c₃I₃ and c₂I₂, with 3c₃+2c₂=a, and assign positive weights w₃,w₂ to their squared sizes.
D=3/w₃+2/w₂; c₃=a/(w₃D), c₂=a/(w₂D).
Cauchy–Schwarz gives |a|²≤D[3w₃|c₃|²+2w₂|c₂|²], with equality exactly for the displayed corrections. Equal weights give a/5 in each block. With w₃=2 and w₂=1, the minimizing corrections are a/7 and 2a/7 instead.
This calculation is an extension developed here, not a source-derived physical cost. It demonstrates why a preferred projection in connection space depends on its metric. Neither group symmetry nor the phrase “minimal correction” fixes experimental response weights without stating what is minimized.

Correcting a discrete link introduces branches
For one block-unitary link let d=det U₃ det U₂. Choose a fifth root ζ with ζ⁵=d and set Ũ₃=ζ−1U₃, Ũ₂=ζ−1U₂. Then their determinant product is ζ−5d=1. Expanding a short link recovers the equal trace subtraction.
There are five roots, differing by e2πik/5. On links near identity a continuous branch can be selected locally. Around a parameter circle, however, d(φ)=eiφ has no single-valued continuous fifth root: following a root once returns it multiplied by e2πi/5.
Thus independent pointwise corrections are insufficient to specify a globally coherent transport. Branch choices and transition functions must be tracked, and resulting loop products compared. The fivefold ambiguity here comes from correcting five defining directions. It is distinct from the sixfold kernel in the group’s covering map. This discrete calculation extends the source’s local connection prescription and does not assert microscopic implementation.

Keep the global group and its preparation explicit
The stabilizer of the splitting, metrics and product tensor is S(U(3)×U(2)). The map (A,B,z)↦(z−2A,z³B) from SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) has kernel generated by (e2πi/3I₃,−I₂,eiπ/3). Its six elements explain the quotient and the descent condition q+2t₃+3t₂≡0 modulo six.
That algebraic result presupposes the retained tensor. The operational source distinguishes preserving a prepared product coherence from producing it. A covariant operation starting with invariant preparations cannot generate a standalone coherence carrying the full product-determinant character. A coherent dual reservoir can transfer the desired reference, with an explicit asymmetry cost.
A concrete test therefore has three parts: identify the actual tensor resource, check its transport around loops, and verify the chosen correction or comparison rule. Passing a local trace test handles only part of that programme. The determinant-line calculation makes each missing input measurable or mathematically well posed without turning it into a prediction of matter content or coupling strength.
